Pope appoints Franciscan to Religious Congregation
In his first appointment to the Vatican's central bureaucracy, Pope Francis has named the head of the main group of Franciscans as the Vatican's second-in-command for religious life.
The pope has named Franciscan Fr. José Rodríguez Carballo OFM as secretary for the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, the Vatican announced Saturday.

Blessed Angela's life (1881-1922) is striking because of its simplicity and the felt sense of love. Some parts of her family history, though, was tough: she was the youngest child of nine brothers, often undernourished, weak and sick, she was unruly and capricious. Angela received some schooling and learned to read, but spelling was not a skill she could take pride in. Angela learned to be a pious woman and in time she was eager to read good book. By her late teenage years, she entered to the Association of Saint Zita (caring for sick people.)
Little by little she understood that her vocation was to suffer with Christ, and accept it resolutely, but conscious of its weakness. She spent many hours in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament and read books of spiritual depth, taking copious notes. By order of her confessor, Angela began to make notes of the mystical experiences. When one of the people she was looking after died, interpersonal difficulties with the deceased's family surfaced for Angela. She wrote that it feels suddenly that Jesus says to her: "Daughter, why do you worry? I have not left to you."
In order to follow more closely Christ crucified and poor, she joined the Secular Franciscan Order on March 15 1912, and is professed vows on the 6th of August of 1913. As a lay woman consecrated to Christ living under the Rule of St Francis for the Laity, Angela is an example to all of us that obstacles can be overcome with grace.
At her 1991 beatification in Kraków, Pope John Paul II said: "It is in this city that she worked, that she suffered and that her holiness came to maturity. While connected to the spirituality of St. Francis, she showed an extraordinary responsiveness to the action of the Holy Spirit" (L'Osservatore Romano, 34.4, 1991).

Saint Crescentia Hoess was born on October 20, 1682, in Kaufbeuren, a little town in the diocese of Augsburg. Her father, Matthias Hoess, a simple weaver, was barely able in spite of diligent work to provide the necessaries for his family of eight children. But he was a pious Christian, satisfied with his condition, and delighted to think upon the poor life and the bitter suffering of Jesus Christ. The mother bore a tender love for the sick and poor.

Franciscans in China Before Marco Polo
Did you know that Marco Polo was not the first western European to reach China? The Franciscan monk Giovanni da Pian del Carpini reached China in the 1240s (more than 20 years before Polo) He had an audience with the Great Khan of the Mongol empire. Other Catholic emissaries followed later. These included including William of Rubruck, who traveled east in the 1250s on a quest to convert the Mongols to Christianity.
Another Franciscan by the name of Odoric of Pordenone also travelled to China starting in 1318. He also made it to the Philippines where he celebrated the first mass at Bolinao, Pangasinan around 1324. That predated the reputed first Catholic mass held by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 by almost 200 years! He also traveled through Tibet reaching Lhasa. Little is known about this, but he probably made some contact with Buddhist monks. He traveled through India and Persia, as well

Croatia: Monk Island
Franciscan monks are the only inhabitants of the tiny Croatian island of Kosljun. They no longer see saving souls as their main task - instead they tend to their monastery and its gardens.
