Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles, in his first pastoral letter, invoked the Catholic history of California and called on all Catholics to witness to the "New World of Faith."
The Franciscan connection to the Catholic history of California is a strong one, considering that Franciscan missionaries were highly instrumental in bringing the Christian faith to this region between 1769 and 1823. There were a total of 21 missions established during this time.
