St. Francis Table: A Capuchin Franciscan Outreach

The Capuchin Franciscan friars of the Province of the Good Shepherd, Canada have been involved with St. Francis Table since December  1987 when it first opened its doors in Toronto’s Parkdale neighbourhood. With a seating capacity of 40 people, they average 250 meals per day. To date over 500,000 meals have been served.

Half of the  patrons are post-psychiatric patients who are unable to work due to their illness. Many  patrons  most of theirsmall  income on accommodation. About one quarter of our patrons are senior citizens who come for nourishment and companionship. St. Francis Table also provides meals to single parents, refugees, the unemployed, transients, ex-convicts and people living in Toronto's streets, parks and alleys.

Back on October 4th, seven Capuchin brothers were on hand to share the Feast of St. Francis with the patrons of the Table and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the opening of the restaurant.

For $ 2 the unprivileged  are served a hearty meal. On the occasion of the Feast Day of St. Francis, they were served ravioli, salad, chili con carne and bread with coffee and dessert. This is typical of a meal served there.

Here in Oshawa, a number of the Secular Franciscans work at St. Vincent's Kitchen, which is similar to St. Francis Table providing inexpensive, nutritious meals for the poor.
