Just after holding the synod on the New Evangelization, Vatican officials say that Pope Benedict XVI will start his own Twitter account. The Holy Father has used Twitter before when a news portal for all of the Vatican’s news outlet was launched. The Pope will now have his own account. It will be offered in five or six languages, and, possibly Latin, the official language of the Roman Catholic Church. The Pope, who prefers to write letters by hand, will not be tweeting himself, but he will approve each message posted on his behalf.
At the recent synod of bishops, one thing that emerged from it was that the social networks such as Twitter and Facebook are place where "consciences are often formed, where people spend their time and live their lives. It is a new opportunity for touching the human heart." Otherwise, if this is where people are, so these are the places where we need to reach out.
The objective of the Vatican is to evangelize through Twitter, which has around 500 million users.
